"Zipless Fucks"... Seems ideal, but it just can't work.

“The zipless fuck is absolutely pure. It is free of ulterior motives. There is no power game . The man is not "taking" and the woman is not "giving." No one is attempting to cuckold a husband or humiliate a wife. No one is trying to prove anything or get anything out of anyone. The zipless fuck is the purest thing there is. And it is rarer than the unicorn. And I have never had one.”

This passage really stood out to me. Maybe it’s because I’m a college student and the occurrence of “zipless fucks” and “one-night stands” is commonplace, or maybe it’s because I recently watched Friends With Benefits. Sure, society’s general perception of males as sexual animals seeking nothing but physical pleasure may very well be true, but Jong coined her term with Isadora keeping in mind the implications it would have for women as pleasure seeking creatures as well. The “zipless fuck” is a term suggesting Freudian psychoanalytic theory: all humans, both males and females, operate according to pleasure principle.

In my opinion, the idea of emotionless sexual experience between two parties devoid of any connection or genuine feeling is a utopian idea. Random hookups at fraternity parties are one thing, but sex is on an entirely different level. Personally, I don’t agree the idea of a “zipless fuck” as “the purest thing there is” and know for a fact that it’s more common than unicorn sightings. Emotionless sex is attainable for some people, but it’s all-dependent on your standards and what one you want to get out of the experience. “One night stands” can’t become habits or regular episodes with the same people either. I can speak for myself from personal experience, but I’m many others would agree with the view that sexual intimacy and sincere affection come hand in hand.

  1. Eric! I like how you related "zipless fucks" to college hook up culture. I also liked how you challenged the traditional college view on promiscuous males vs. promiscuous females. It's true that guys who fuck a lot of girls are seen as "pimps and players" and girls who fuck a lot of guys are seen as whores. It's nice to see a guy believe that "all humans, both males and females, operate according to pleasure principle". If people accepted Freud's theory, that all human beings, regardless of gender, are driven to seek pleasure, then maybe we wouldn't have this double standard.
